If you’re looking for something to do during the Easter half term week, the Discover Racing day, at Lingfield Park is perfect for all the family.
Don’t worry if you’ve never been racing before, this is the day when everyone can learn something new about our fantastic sport. Start the day early with a behind-the-scenes tour of the racecourse in the company of an ex-jockey where you’ll get to see areas not usually open to the public such as the Weighing Room, then see a horse being saddled for a race before testing your skills on the Equicizer – our mechanical horse.
There will also be a display of horsemanship from master ‘horse whisperer’ Gary Witheford. Gary is no stranger to Lingfield Park and is back by popular demand to demonstrate his unique skills in communication with horses. Gary is one of those rare people who has been able, through a combination of natural ability, a willingness to discover and adopt new techniques, and a real passion for working with difficult horses, to carve himself a unique niche in the horse world. As such, he is in demand not only to assist with ‘difficult horses’ but also to introduce young race horses to their racing career. He’ll be here to show you how a young horse learns to wear a saddle and carry a jockey for the first time.
Additionally there’ll be an opportunity to see the ‘inner workings of the race horse’ as we will be painting the muscles onto a horse so show us how they enable the horse to reach such fantastic speeds. You can also get interactive with industry experts who will be on hand to answer your questions.
This day is being run in support of The British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust (BHEST) which is a registered charity, with two main areas of activity. They develop and deliver qualifications in the racing, thoroughbred breeding, equine and farriery industries and they also provide horseracing’s education programme – Racing to School.
Racing to School is a free education programme which takes over 10,000 children each year from across the UK on a unique learning experience at their local racecourse, trainer’s yard or stud. The programmes lively approach supports children in a range of National Curriculum subjects, sparks knowledge and understanding of the sport of horseracing, and helps invest in racing’s future. Racing to School supports many children each year who are disadvantaged, have special educational needs or who come from inner city areas with little access to learning outside the classroom. The programme equips pupils with a range of new skills and improves confidence and team-work.
From early afternoon attention will turn to the track as we have a great programme of flat racing – including the International Trial Listed Race – allowing you to put your new found knowledge of what to look for in a race horse into action as you try and pick the winners. It’s also Grand National Day – the most famous horse race in the world – and you’ll be able to watch all the action from Aintree on our big screen.
Tickets are on sale now priced from just £14* (£16 on the day). Don’t forget that accompanied under 18’s are admitted free of charge and all activity around course will also be free! There are discounts available for groups of 10 or more and concessions for over 60’s and students – making it a great day out for all the family.
