Following the recent departure of the Tunbridge Wells Jazz Festival, we have searched out the best upcoming musical events around the area to fill the void…


Tenterden Folk Festival, Tenterden. Thursday September 29th- Sunday October 2nd

The annual Tenterden Folk Festival runs across this weekend, providing entertainment for all the family in the form of folk song, music, dance and crafts in keeping with the festival’s traditions. Concerts, music sessions and dance displays are some of the many aspects incorporated in this large event. As the 24th Tenterden festival to be held, the event is expected to be well attended and even includes an English barn dance and high street procession.



Violin Concerto at the Royal Tunbridge Wells Symphony Orchestra. Sunday 2nd. 3pm.

Violinist Callum Smart is performing his rendition of Korngold’s Violin Concerto this Sunday. Dating back to 1945, Korngold originally produced the melodies in light of his childhood fleeing Vienna for the USA in the 1930s and the melodies have grown in popularity. Conducted by Roderick Dunk in Tunbridge Wells this weekend, the performance also promises to include well known melodies; Prokofiev’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ ballad score and the theme music from BBC’s ‘The Apprentice.’ Tickets start at £17, or £1 for children and students.



Mr Popper’s Penguins at The Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells. Sat 1st Oct. 1.30pm.

Described as ‘a show that radiates warmth throughout’, Mr Popper’s Penguins is the perfect event for the younger ones – bound to provide entertainment to both adults and children through the musical performance of a penguin on his Artic adventures. An education pack is available to download beforehand for any children attending, and the 55 minute running time is perfect for the more easily distracted younger crowd. Based on the famous US novel by Richard and Florence Atwater, the show is arriving in Tunbridge Wells before its appearance in the West End!


Funkin Function

Funkin’ Function at The Grey Lady, Tunbridge Wells. Sat 1st Oct. 9.40pm.

Funkin’ Function is a young, energetic cover band from London, arriving in the Grey Lady ready to perform an array of different styles, catering to all tastes in music. The perfect event for the larger group, Funkin’ Function offer both male and female vocals with covers of an array of pop classics- from Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder to Cee lo Green and Beyoncé.



10CC in concert, The Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells. Wed 5th Oct. 7.30pm.

Celebrating their 40th anniversary of their seminal album Sheet Music, including top 10 single ‘The Wall Street Shuffle’, 10cc return this month to the Assembly Hall Theatre. The band promise two sets, with the first half comprised solely of sheet music- followed by a symbolic turning of the vinyl album. This event is perfect for a reminiscent indulgence in the musical scene from around 1974, when their album reached no 9 in the UK album charts. Their music is said to have influenced Freddie Mercury, and bids to provide the perfect musical showcase. Tickets are priced at £32.50 each.
