Tales of phantom hitchhikers and mysterious figures who appear at the side of the road are not uncommon, but what is it about roads that attracts so many restless spirits? Some may be the victims of motor accidents, destined to haunt the scene of their demise; for others, perhaps an eternity pacing along an endless highway is a metaphor for their otherworldly torment?

Whatever the reason, there’s a wandering wraith in Tenterden, according to a report dating from February 1997. A woman was driving along the A28 through the town when, as she approached Silver Hill, a man dressed in black stepped out in front of her car. Even as the horrified motorist slammed on the brakes, she became aware that the figure was semi-transparent. Convinced that she had struck the strange individual, she stopped immediately and hunted for what she expected to be a badly wounded man – but there was no sign of the reckless walker…
