Mysterious Weald

Keep a clear head if you don’t want to be terrorised in Rusthall…

In 1966 a man strolling through Rusthall got more than he bargained for when he bumped into an unexpected equestrian. The incautious fellow was taking the path that leads from Broomhill Road through Hurst Woods when he heard the thunderous sound of horse’s hooves approaching from behind. Already alarmed at the speed of the animal, he moved out of the way and then turned to look at the rider – to his horror, he saw the man was dressed in Cromwellian costume and was missing his head!

If the terrified witness had fled back to Broomhill Road, he might not have found much solace there – a spectral figure in a grey suit has occasionally been spotted standing at the roadside. Some believe his vigil marks the former site of a long-gone cottage…

Head to the Red Lion pub for a stiff drink and you might want to watch where you’re putting your feet, as a phantom hound is rumoured to sleep on the bar floor.
