Mysterious Weald

High spirits at a Lamberhurst hostelry…

This bank holiday weekend, fans of the supernatural have a treat in store, when the infamous Enfield poltergeist case is dramatised for Sky television (The Enfield Haunting starts at 9pm on Sunday May 3 on Sky Living). But the Weald can lay claim to its own poltergeist activity, if the story is to be believed…

There were spirited goings-on at a pub in Lamberhurst a few years ago, when the landlord and landlady were terrorised by things going bump in the night – and it wasn’t the punters. Tracey Saunders and Martin Potter took over The Swan at the Vineyard in Furnace Lane in late 2008 and were soon being plagued by strange phenomena, such as slamming doors, creepy rustling sounds and unexplained breakages.

One night the pair had closed up the pub and were relaxing at the bar, when they both suddenly heard rustling noises and turned on instinct at the same moment. Seeing nothing, they went up to bed, but in the morning they found that several glasses had fallen from a shelf and smashed. When they scrutinised the CCTV footage from that night, they saw a ‘swarm of strange objects’ near the bar and what appeared to be a shadowy figure.

Is there a spirit in the pub other than what’s in the optics? Perhaps you should pay a visit and find out for yourself…
