Mysterious Weald

Take care when strolling near Bodiam Castle this Christmas…

As this particular spectre was first spotted on Christmas Eve, it would do to be cautious when travelling along the road between Bodiam Castle and Sandhurst during the festive season. Lying on either side of the road are two bodies of water – Chapel Pond and Brick House Pond – both of which have been the scene of a tragedy. In 1870 a young man drowned himself in Brick House Pond; during the mid-20th century a woman did the same in the other pool. Do their restless spirits still haunt the spot?

A chap called Brian Lee would claim that at least one apparition resides in the area. At 8pm on Christmas Eve in 1973, he was walking along Bodiam Road with a friend, Henry Hodd, when he spotted a man of about 30 standing in the hedge adjacent to Brick House Pond. Henry could not see the figure, but he later testified that his friend had certainly been “a bit scared by something” – Brian tried to hide behind his pal, claiming that the strange man was smiling at him and he “didn’t like it very much”. Brian even asked Henry to keep the unseen fellow away from him, such was his immediate reaction of dismay and fear. Will the lonesome phantom reappear this Christmas?
