Is there a spook on a mission at an East Sussex pub?
The Blackboys Inn in the picturesque village of Blackboys, near Uckfield, enjoys a tranquil setting but some believe that a restless spirit is on a haunting quest inside the attractive pub.
According to the ParanormalDatabase.com, reports of ghostly goings-on were first made in the 1970s. Residents and punters claimed to have heard footsteps in the night and experienced sudden drops in temperature, with no apparent cause. Stories differ as to whether the ghost itself has ever made a sound – some sources report witnesses hearing the spirit call out a name, although they couldn’t make it out clearly, while others say it’s never uttered a sound – but all are united on the suspected identity of the unhappy shade.
It is commonly considered to be the ghost of Anne, or Annie, Starr, an 18th century cleaner who fell pregnant and was then abandoned by the father. Again, we have a discrepancy – some say she died in childbirth, others that Anne survived but the baby perished shortly afterwards. Either way, it appears that the grief-stricken spirit of the poor lady still roams the pub’s corridors, desperately seeking the beloved child she lost three centuries ago…
