Peter Phillips, 12th in line to the throne, is a long time horse enthusiast – and with his sister Zara Phillips winning an equestrian Silver medal at the London Olympics, he’s in good company. So caught up with Peter as the Global Champions Tour returns to London.
Calling the tour, taking place a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace, “the Formula One of show jumping,” Phillips aims to take equestrian sport out of its traditional setting and in doing so make it more accessible.
“We’re on Horse Guards Parade, one of the most iconic venues in the world. To be able to hold a major international show jumping event here has taken two years of hard work,” he says, “and it’s going to create three days of fantastic jumping.”
Phillips insists that, with mainland Europe the centre of the show jumping world of late, the UK is seeing the effects.
“There are world class horses and world class centres right on our European doorstep and we’re now starting to reap the benefits of that, hence the gold medals that the team are bringing back.”
