ROYAL RECOGNITION

WE FIND OUT WHAT THE ROYALS REALLY USE IN THEIR OWN HOMES…

Up until a few weeks ago, we assumed the Queen’s finely manicured nails were painted with a gloss spun from silk and adorned with the finest gold leaf, soaked in champagne…or something. We definitely didn’t think she used the very same nail polish we have at home, which only costs £7.99 a pop. But, it was revealed recently that Her Majesty’s go-to varnish is none other than Essie’s Ballet Slippers – a pale pink polish she’s been coveting since 1989. So, this got us thinking…what other everyday products do the royals use? And, as we’re in the vicinity of a royal town, should we be stocking our cupboards with these regal items?

HEINZ

Since 1951 Heinz (who acquired HP Foods Ltd) have held a royal warrant. As well as baked beans, tomato ketchup and soups, the company also produces lots of other cupboard staples like HP sauce and Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce. We’re not sure whether beans on toast is a regular dinner for the royals like it is for us though…

CLARINS

In 1952 Queen Elizabeth II commissioned the company to make her own shade of lipstick to match the ceremonial robes, and has been using the brand ever since – although they were only issued a royal warrant in 2007. It’s not been confirmed which products she swears by, but a spokesperson for Clarins tells us: “Clarins (UK) Ltd is proud to be a member of the Royal Warrant Holders Association. Although we are unable to disclose the specific products used by the Queen, we can confirm that she is a fan of the Hand and Nail Treatment Cream!”

SHEPHERD NEAME

Britain’s oldest brewer is based right here in Kent, and holds a royal warrant – by appointment to HRH the Prince of Wales. It was first appointed a warrant in 1998 for the Grant’s Morella Cherry Brandy which was a favourite of Queen Victoria’s, and in 2014 in recognition of Shepherd Neame’s longstanding position as a supplier of specialist orders to Prince Charles, permission was given for the royal warrant to be used on bottles of its flagship beer – Spitfire Premium Kentish Ale.

HUNTER

They’re the wellies all the celebrities don when they head to a festival, but Hunter also hold not one, but two royal warrants – by appointment to the Queen and also to Prince Philip. The suppliers of waterproof footwear have held the warrant since 1977, and their designs are often spotted on other royals, such as Kate Middleton and Prince William.

WAITROSE

You probably wouldn’t catch the Queen and Prince Philip pushing the trolley around doing their weekly grocery shopping, but nevertheless, Waitrose has held a royal warrant since 2002 after the branch in Windsor, Berks, began supplying the Royal Household. It’s the first, and so far the only supermarket chain to hold a warrant.

SCHWEPPES

Many of us are guilty of enjoying a cheeky G&T now and again, and it would seem the royals are no different – Schweppes has held a royal warrant since 1836, and was the official sponsor of the Great Exhibition in 1851. It’s probably no coincidence that Gordon’s Gin also holds a royal warrant. Well, if it’s good enough for the royals…
