Afer years of trying to secure funding to rebuild their Victorian glasshouses, The Walled Nursery in Hawkhurst have received a surprise donation of £200,000 to help with their projects.

Donated by the granddaughter of Ernest Hardcastle, the original head gardener of the estate which was once known as Tongswood, the substantial sum now means work can shortly begin on rebuilding the Carnation House, the Cucumber House, the Pelargonium House and the Hot House.

“We feel extremely lucky; this lady has fast forwarded us ten years in terms of what we could’ve achieved ourselves in rebuilding these glasshouses,” says owner Emma Davies. “We are forever grateful for this support and we’d love you all to come along to watch our progress.”
