Tunbridge Wells Talking Point

The story everyone’s been discussing this month…

Following a report on Tunbridge Wells’ Marks and Spencer stores being at risk of closure, M&S have rejected it as ‘pure speculation’. The iconic high street retailer recently announced plans to close 30 stores in the UK and convert 45 others into food-only stores due to the business model being restructured away from the less profitable clothing ranges. Revealing which of its 304 full-line stores (those that sell clothing, hardware and food) are being considered for closure has been refused. M&S has three local stores: the original Calverley Road shop in the town centre, an express shop within St John’s Road’s BP petrol station and the largest – the food and home store, on the Fountains Retail Park. The retail analysis firm Local Data Company released a paper that placed the town as one of 52 that could be targeted.
