As Britain rides high on medal successes, three pubs have their own reasons to celebrate – free beer for a year thanks to Spitfire Premium Ale’s Glorious 2012 promotion.
The lucky pubs, George & Dragon, Ilfracombe; The Bull, Tunbridge Wells; and New Hall Tavern, Preston, have each won a firkin a week for a year – 3,744 pints – after being selected at random in a text-to-win on-cask promotion.
The iconic ale was originally brewed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. It is a firm favourite with licensees and consumers, famed for its characteristically Kentish hoppy flavour and cheeky advertising campaign.
Kate Maclean, Spitfire brand manager, said: “It is wonderful to see these licencees so overjoyed about stocking Spitfire. They have first-hand experience of the brand’s vibrant and active engagement with consumers through its distinctive taste and irreverent humour.
“Glorious 2012 is a great way to help us cement our long-term relationships with licencees and help them increase sales.”
Dean and Becky Wirrell of The Bull entered the promotion four times.
Becky said: “I think we’ll be serving a few Spitfires on the house to our regulars, though it’s incredible that every time I serve one over the next year I’ll be able to think, ‘Kerrching!’”
Dean joked: “The last time I won anything it was a meat raffle 20 years ago. I got home and had to defrost the freezer to fit it all in.”
Dean and Becky have been at the pub for five years – their first licence – though they have been in the trade for 20 and 15 years respectively. They stock the occasional seasonal ale, but it is Spitfire the regulars demand.
They have invested in their pub and are confident that the year’s supply will further enhance trade.
