HERITAGE HELPING

£3.45 million has been awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund to a bid to acquire large amounts of Sir Winston Churchill’s personal objects and to make public access to his historic family home at Chartwell. An appeal for funding was launched in September by the National Trust to help improve the site near Westerham. The goal is to reach the appeal target of £7.1 million by January 2017 to enable the broader project work to commence and secure the collection. If successful, many family rooms would be open to the public for the first time, Churchill’s bedroom included. Books, medallions and around-the-world awards would also be secured, not to mention his Nobel Prize in Literature and a note-storing box he used in his speeches.
