Shoppers in Tunbridge Wells can enjoy some extra Christmas cheer this year, as a special land train will be helping to transport them around the town.
Thanks to the Kent-based Markerstudy Group, the festive land train will help take the strain for busy Christmas shoppers by providing a free shuttle between the top and bottom of town. Visitors and tourists will also benefit from riding on the vehicle, which will take them to various attractions and points of interest, including the ice rink at Calverley Grounds and the famous Pantiles.
With its steam train style ‘engine’ and two jauntily decorated carriages, seating 35 passengers, the Santa Express will add some seasonal magic to Tunbridge Wells and it is hoped that the train experience will attract a significant number of extra visitors to the town.
The Santa Express will set out from the Assembly Hall Theatre every 20 minutes and has designated stops outside the ice rink, in the old High Street and by The Pantiles. Helpers will be on hand to answer questions and hand out information about the town’s attractions. Starting on November 29, the free service will run from 10am to 4pm and from 6pm to 8pm daily until December 29, excluding Christmas Day.
Markerstudy Group, which owns five businesses in the town – Next Dimension Gymnastic Academy, Salomons, The Brew House Hotel, Insurance Shop and So magazines – has been working closely with Tunbridge Wells Borough Council to make the train idea a reality.
Nick Moore from Markerstudy Group says: “We hope the train will be extremely popular with visitors, tourists and shoppers. It’s a free service, but we plan to have charity collections on the train to help people spread some festive cheer to those in need.”
