Algae Alert

Algae Alert

The story everyone’s been discussing this month…

Although the Indian summer of late has been good for crops, the autumn sunshine has had an adverse effect on a local lake. Visitors to Bedgebury Pinetum have been warned to stay out of the lake as it contains a potentially deadly algae. Cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, naturally occur in inland waters, estuaries and the sea, but when their numbers become excessive, blooms form which could produce toxins.

The outdoor attraction in Goudhurst has put up signs advising people not to allow children or dogs to enter the water until the algae clears – which should happen naturally over time.
