Fine dining in tranquil surroundings is all very well, but sometimes girls just want to have fun. So we told Jane Connolly to gather a posse of friends and ride on down to Smith & Westernat the bottom of town to find out if it really is the perfect place for a hoedown.
…It’s a good job we’re all starving, because the menu is Hearty with a capital H. Well, maybe ‘starving’ is the wrong word – greedy might be a better one. After bickering over what to start with, we decide to sample all the big hitters and share out, so soon the table is heaving with a dazzling array of dishes. The buffalo wings in Southern Comfort sauce go down a treat, as does the garlic and herb butter-smothered cob loaf with its decadent melted cheese that just goes on and on. My Ballyhoo deep-fried tiger prawns with sweet chilli dip have just the right amount of spice and feel pleasantly light – though I immediately spoil this virtuous start by digging in to my neighbour’s hickory smoked ribs glazed with the restaurant’s own barbecue sauce. Some ribs can be overly fatty and literally dripping in sauce, but these are just right for a lighter nibble…
