There is a wealth of cafés in Tunbridge Wells for quick bites while shopping, but where can discerning ladies (and gents) who lunch go for a more sophisticated treat? Pitcher & Piano is now filling the daytime gap with its atmospheric upstairs restaurant, as Sarah Bond found out…
We love lunch, my friends and I, so I couldn’t wait to try Pitcher & Piano’s offerings amid the elegance of its light, bright dining area – with handy gilt mirrors to check your appearance everywhere you look!
I was also intrigued to see how it looked in daylight, after its fame as a night-time party venue, and it did not disappoint. With the revellers safely tucked up in bed with their hangovers, daytime P&P provides a wonderfully peaceful haven in the heart of the town.
There’s a whole menu for those who merely wish to graze, including breaded mushrooms with garlic and parsley mayo (£3.95), crispy calamari with garlic mayo and honey and mustard glazed mini pork sausages with a wholegrain mustard mayo dip (both at £4.25). I was tempted by the homemade baby fishcakes at £4.95, but went for the tasty breaded mushrooms instead.
Those who love to share nibbles can go for a whole selection of tasty tidbits with the P&P Sharer at £12.75, while soups, salads and sandwiches are also available on the new summer menu. And for the truly hungry, main courses include a 10oz 21-day matured rump steak with all the trimmings (£12.95), Cumberland sausages and mash with caramelised onion gravy (£9.50) and good old fish and chips (£9.25).
But I can never resist a great burger, so I go for one of their homemade range – the BBQ with bacon, Butler’s Secret Mature Cheddar topped with jalapenos and barbecue sauce (all my favourites served at a scrumptious £9.95). I only wish I could have managed their ‘Ultimate’ Burger – the bumper New Yorker (£13.50), which includes two beef burgers and a chicken breast.
After the tasty forerunners, comes the really big issue of the day – pud! All respectable ladies who lunch are very sticky about that. Once again, P&P came up trumps, with such naughties as homemade chocolate brownie with ‘indulgent’ chocolate sauce and ice cream (£4.75), banoffee pie (£4.75) and a delicious sticky toffee pudding with ice cream (£4.95). Yes, I had that! I’m now tempted to nickname it the Pitcher & Pud.
There’s a small ‘Red Room’ for private dining and apparently there’s been a smattering of celebrity diners spotted here, such as stars of Eastenders and The Only Way Is Essex. I’m sure to be back, so I’ll keep my eyes peeled for any famous faces…
