Harvest of the first of the season’s soft fruits is now well underway at Chegworth Valley. With land covering over 200 acres, strawberries and raspberries are now being picked by the tray-load on a daily basis and will continue harvest throughout the summer.
The warm spells of weather have meant that the fruit is now coming into its optimum sweetness, and with high demand following the start of Wimbledon earlier this week the timing could not have been better.
Ben Deme, farm manager at Chegworth Valley, commented: “This year is looking to be an exceptional year for soft fruit and the plants are laden with berries. With the warm weather we have recently had the produce across the farm is coming on really well and we are extremely busy keeping up with picking everything as it ripens”.
This week alone, over 6000 punnets of raspberries and around 3000 punnets of strawberries will be picked before being sold at the farm’s London shops as well as at the farm gate shop in Kent and farmers’ markets across London.
Although not usually open to the public, Chegworth Valley will be hosting an open day with guided tours and juices tastings on Sunday 10 August 2014 giving a unique opportunity to visitors to see ‘behind the scenes’ and an interesting insight into how the fruit and vegetables are grown with the chance to buy all the produce on the day.
