What better on a fine summer’s day (it was raining again) than to exercise an Englishman’s divine right to wallow in the glorious ceremony of Sunday lunch at a fine country house hotel? Joe Murphy claims his birthright with a trip to Ashdown Park Hotel and Country Club near Forest Row.
…The confit duck is of course fantastic, elegantly presented in old world china, dainty yet substantial in flavour and texture, light but rich with a smoky finish. The soup, served at the table, is met with equal joy – simple, creamy and perfectly composed. At some point in the proceedings, Russell has planted a heavy bottle of Chilean Red on the table, we’ve let him choose and the Nostros Merlot, Gran Reserva, Casablanca Valley is an exceptional choice – this merlot is a rich, ripe, fleshy example of its type…
