ANDREW EYRE IS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE STAG THEATRE IN SEVENOAKS. HERE, HE TELLS US WHY HE LOVES WHERE HE LIVES…
Where do you live and how long have you lived there for?
I have lived in Sevenoaks since moving into the area for work in the early 1990s. As a young family we rented initially in Baileys Hill before moving into the town itself where we have lived for nearly 25 years.
What’s your favourite shop locally?
As a practically-minded person my favourite shop is the Hardware Store on London Road. They have always been able to supply everything I have ever asked them for – often from a drawer behind the scenes. “Oh yes I think we have one of those…”
Where’s the best place to go for a Sunday stroll?
The wonderful acres of Knole Park provide a huge variety of walks from open grassland to woodland. I can also enter from so many directions, and during summer I can even catch the No.7 vintage Routemaster bus from the end of my street.
The best place to get a cup of coffee?
There are so many excellent places in Sevenoaks now but the best is on my doorstep – The Stag Café. It is spacious, quiet, has free WiFi and excellent leaf tea in proper tea pots (my preferred drink). It has a children’s play area (which I don’t use…) but it also has a quiet business area in an adjacent room I use to meet guests.
Where do you take people when they come to visit?
In Sevenoaks the best place is Knole Park and Knole House which is currently being transformed inside. But I also take visitors around The Stag Theatre which itself is a tourist and visitor destination and of course the Vine Cricket ground – the oldest continually used cricket ground in the world. We end by wandering around the town visiting the shops and seeing the relaxed space which is Sevenoaks.
What’s the night life like where you live?
I think the best description is relaxed. It is wonderful to have a cultural centre in The Stag Theatre and cinema but there are numerous restaurants in town. So an evening out best combines a meal and a visit to the theatre or cinema.
Where’s your favourite place to eat locally?
As with cafés there is an excellent variation available. We regularly eat at Loch Fyne or the Cote Brasserie and for special occasions we use El Matador.
Are there any nice views nearby?
Sevenoaks is surrounded by wonderful views and as you walk about you always catch glimpses of far-off rolling countryside through the buildings which can be reached with only a short drive or cycle. You can see the best views simply by walking into Knole Park where wildlife crosses your path as well.
Where’s the best place to meet friends and socialise?
Meeting friends is best done centrally in town and for me somewhere with a quiet corner. The Stag Café is top of my list for the proper tea and excellent cake but there are wonderful quiet corners upstairs in Darcy’s or Otto’s along the Upper High Street. (Have I given the secret away now?)
Why do you love where you live?
Sevenoaks is a wonderful, relaxed and beautiful town which I am proud to call my home.
