‘Educating Mind, Body, Heart and Soul’
Mayfield is a leading independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18. Set in the beautiful, yet easily accessible Sussex countryside, it’s only 50 minutes by train to central London, 40 minutes from Gatwick Airport and about an hour from Heathrow.
We have an enviable academic record, exceptional pastoral care and extensive extracurricular activities. Mayfield girls learn how to combine rigorous academic study with a diverse range of activities beyond the classroom.
From dance and top-class equestrian facilities to fencing and debating, Mayfield challenges its girls to realise their full potential, providing them with a lifelong love of learning, so that they leave as mature, educated and independent young women, confident in their beliefs and prepared to make a positive difference in the world.
Described by the ISI as ‘outstanding’ and by Country Life as ‘one of the finest schools in the land’, a Mayfield education combines academic rigour, breadth of opportunity and a strong sense of community, embodying our motto, ‘Actions not Words’.
At Mayfield, each girl is accepted for who she is, and we instil in her the confidence to find her strengths and build on them. We will give her the time, space and emotional support she needs to flourish. We will expect her to think independently, and our enthusiastic teachers will inspire in her a lifelong love of learning. We will stimulate her imagination and nurture her creativity in every subject she studies.
Her actions will be inspired by a sense of justice and integrity, sustained by her respect for others. Overall, she will have the chance to grow to be herself.
Mayfield is a vibrant community. Traditionally, we have attracted pupils from all round the world, as well as locally. We are able to offer a very supportive structure, which ensures that we support what best suits your daughter’s requirements. From day to full boarding, there is an opportunity to flexi-board and weekly board too.
We have day pupil transport, which covers a large area of Sussex and Kent, enabling flexibility for parents and the girls to have a full day at school. We offer a weekly bus service to and from Central London, which leaves on Friday afternoon and returns on Sunday evening, giving your daughter time at home over the weekend. For our full boarders, we have a wonderful array of activities and trips, so there is never a dull moment!
Such a cosmopolitan ethos helps the girls to understand and appreciate different cultures and perspectives, and to value diversity. Friendships are forged here, which sustain and support not only through school, but on into the future, and we are proud to welcome successive generations of girls back to Mayfield.
Sum up the ethos of your school
Mayfield is a lively, happy and successful school. It offers amazing opportunities, helping girls to challenge stereotypical views of what they can and should achieve. Mathematics and science are among its most popular and successful subjects. Equally successful are subjects as diverse as geography and music.
We also excel in areas traditionally considered to be ‘creative’. Mayfield instils in each girl the confidence to find her strengths – wherever they may lie – and build on them. A Mayfield girl is challenged to set herself demanding targets and helped to find strategies to achieve them. Girls are expected to think independently, to question their own and other people’s ideas, and to learn to make informed decisions.
What facilities are on offer?
We have a wide range, from facilities that include a heated indoor swimming pool, dance studio, fully-equipped gym, sports hall, all-weather pitch, equestrian centre with Olympic-sized indoor and outdoor sand school, to stables for 28 horses, four boarding houses, outstanding learning support and sports fields.
How about your biggest achievements to date?
Academic results, equestrian results and award-winning creative arts. We are extremely proud of all that our staff and girls achieve, so we feel that every achievement is our ‘biggest’, however small.
Describe some of the trips and extracurricular activities
While academic study and the pursuit of excellent examination results are important, the benefits that stem from a broad and balanced education are immeasurable. Our programme of extracurricular activities is wide and varied. There are three activity periods each day: one after lunch and two between the end of lessons and the end of school. This gives all girls the opportunity to pursue a range of interests and enthusiasms, including sport, the arts and academic enrichment.
We organise the activities to maximise the opportunity for each girl to take part in a range across the week and the school year. These include fencing, dance, creative arts, performing arts, equestrian, swimming, tennis and yoga. We have an activity booklet, which is produced each year, listing a huge range of opportunities. Trips are also wide and varied, from Iceland, Cambodia, France and Germany, to trips locally and around the UK, which enhance academic learning and for leisure, as we are ideally situated to take advantage of the wonderful places locally and further afield.
Finally, what do you offer that other schools don’t?
Mayfield produces world-renowned ceramicists, and has a dynamic drama department and an enviable sporting tradition. With an equestrian centre on campus, our pupils are able to take advantage of stabling for 28 horses, pony loans/pony share, Olympic-sized outdoor and indoor sand schools, and the opportunity to compete at all levels.
