When Sevenoaks-based Premier Security decided to strengthen its involvement in the market for safes and vaults, Managing Director Vince Humphreys took a long objective view of the current state of the UK safe industry. Safe making was born in Britain yet he was amazed to find safes being shipped half way round the world from China, Indonesia and India. He remarks, “One customer was about to buy a safe shipped from Mumbai when their office was just 17 miles away from a long established safe maker with an almost identical product – it made no sense”.
There seemed to be no logical reason to justify the massive carbon footprint these imported products generated so he set out to work with a British safe manufacturer to design a new range of Premier branded products.
Along the way he also decided to break with a few pointless traditions. He comments, “Safe makers are like Henry Ford – you can have any colour you want – as long as it is bland and neutral”. It seemed to him that customers were being sold what manufacturers’ thought they should have – not what they actually wanted. “We couldn’t understand why they were never offered the option of special sizes or having their new safe ready-prepared to link into their alarm system. Why weren’t they being offered modern interior fittings like watch winders? Safes are often placed under the stairs or in cupboard – yet they never have lights inside them”.
Premier’s new range of safes can be finished in any colour; they can be tailor-made to almost any size and be ready-prepared to link into any existing alarm system. Customers choose from a wide range of interior fittings (including watch winders)and are always offered a maintenance contract. Finally, when you open the door, a light comes on!
